ABOUT
A single thread is an individual gesture. A weaving is a negotiation.
Amy Kertzer is a California- and Maine-based multidisciplinary artist working in interactive art installations and collective weaving. Her site-responsive, participatory weaving practice explores the shifting relationships between control and chance, autonomy and interdependence, the known and the unimagined.
Working at the intersection of weaving, installation, and assemblage, Kertzer draws on reclaimed and repurposed materials, considering how familiar objects take on new meaning when freed from their original purpose and brought into unfamiliar company. Each site informs her selection of materials, whose textures, colors, histories, and associations carry traces of that place into the artwork's unfolding identity.
Each participant enters a work already in motion, encountering the materials, choices, and contributions of those who came before. Weaving in response to what is present, they leave their own mark while altering the possibilities for those who follow. No one determines the final form, and nothing remains entirely their own.
Through collective weaving, Kertzer makes visible the quiet negotiations of community: how we build upon the work of others, embrace the unknown, and offer something of ourselves without knowing where it might lead. Her work asks us to consider what we can create together, and to trust that even our smallest gestures can shape what comes next.
